This exploratory study on YouTube videos investigates the role of Chinese YouTube channels created by influential individuals in facilitating intercultural communication and understanding. Specifically, it explores how YouTube viewers respond, interact, and express their views on Chinese culture. The nature of audience engagement with intercultural communication was explored through the lens of creative textual engagement using a qualitative research approach and textual analysis of five hundred video comments on one of the most subscribed Chinese YouTube channel (i.e., Liziqi). Audience's interpretation goes through a logic of consumption from cognition to emotion to attitudinal change and behavioural intention; the process by an audience promotes intercultural understanding and acquires an identity. Additionally, the interactive relationship between the text and the audience is reciprocal and democratic. Audiences can incorporate and form interpretive communities, regardless of their cultural composition, and cooperate to produce a common meaning regardless of varying interpretations. This study contributes to extending the concept of Fiske's productive audience to intercultural communication and broadens the path for an audience to negotiate and understand Chinese culture

    Get PDF
This research is aimed at examining how the culture of immediacy is implemented in a newspaper undergoing digital transformation. This paper is written based on the case of Harian Kompas, the most influential newspaper in Indonesia, that just officially launched its paywall-based digital site, kompas.id as an alternative platform. Within this context, the daily implemented the digital-first strategy to put the priority of rapid digital news production prior to its slow-pace print edition. Through ethnography fieldwork in the daily’s newsroom, relying on in-depth interviews and participant observations, the study highlights a notion that the culture of immediacy is not easy to implement. The challenge rests on the fact that it is not only contradictory to the common rhythm of rigid newspaper work-flow and deadline among reporters and editors, but further it is considered harmful to the daily’s prescribed core value of comprehensive journalism originated from its editorial philosophy as well as journalism credo of being credible. It is within the constant negotiations among all the newsroom’s actors, the culture of immediacy remains to be a contesting value that should be carried out by the daily as a way to excrete the old habit of print deadline while the digital-first transformation is still taking shape

The purpose of advertising is to effectively promote items or services so that people will buy them. Repetition of viewing to the advertisement for the desired product strengthens purchasing habits. However, advertisements frequently contain sexual and objectification of women. This study aims to analyse the ethical decision-making that occurs due to the information presented using the micro and macro text of beauty product commercials. Thus, this study employs a social semiotics model to comprehend emotional strategies and contentious images by examining the process, effects, and consequence of ethical judgment; they function as mechanisms for propagating specific social culture and ethical values. Despite several past research studies attempting to discover beauty products' ideology using social semiotic analysis, no significant progress has been made to explore the studies on local beauty products. Therefore, a semiotic analysis will be used to obtain the data, as it is the most effective way of comprehending how meaning is produced in text. This research exclusively focuses on how Deeja Cosmetic advertisements employ female portrayal and the specific creative strategies the advertisers utilise to persuade and control their customers. From the analysis, women were presented inferiorly relative to their personalities and roles. At the same time, the findings indicate advertisers portray women as an object of desire to persuade the audience for the brand recall
